The Gucci Paradox by:
There's good news for the Janeane Garofalos of the world who, as a result of post-September 11 comfort food 'n' booze binges, can't squeeze into their little Frankie B's anymore: Toss out the tummy-pinchers! Ultra-baggy and flowing silhouettes are the look du jour for spring. At least, that's what Tom Ford wants you to wear. Confirming his tastemaker status, Ford has turned his back on the sleek, narrow shape he perfected for Gucci and now wants women to go baggy.
Ford's Spring 2002 Gucci collection featured super-wide pants in crushed cotton, silk and suede that could make MC Hammer weep. The drooping pants were paired with jackets and coats with snaps, all hanging oh-so-beautifully from the models' bodies. Other trendsetters opting for a more relaxed shape this spring were Helmut Lang, who veered towards a loose look for his skirts and dresses, and Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, who presented roomy cargo pants that are worth every penny of their pricey tags. And with fashion's most influential trio dictating that big is in, we should all be rejoicing - right?
But of course, what's fashion without contradiction. So here's the bad news: You still have to be stick-thin to look good in these comfy creations. Even worse, you have to be tall, too.
If slinky hip-huggers and cigarette pants are heaven-sent optical illusions that make you appear thinner and taller than you actually are, then super-wide pants are optical nightmares. They add virtual pounds and take away inches of height. So unless you have boyish hips, endless gams and stand at least 5'9'', being a fashion step ahead will be tricky this season. Not that you can't take care of the height issue with a pair of heels, but even stunner Liya Kebede looks a bit dowdy in January's Vogue, donning Gucci's oversized silk pants and stilettos.
What's a girl to do? It's simple enough. Go back to your pre-September 11 routine and watch your favorite TV-shows on the treadmill and replace your martinis with water (no need to cut out the "apocalyptic" sex, however). And even though you might opt to skip the oversized pants, don't rule out the men's-inspired cotton undies Ford sent down the runway just yet. What's a season without Gucci, anyway?
