Julien Macdonald: From Luke Warm to Hot in a New York Minute by:
Karin Nelson
It did seem a bit curious that guests invited to a cocktail reception last night for Givenchy designer Julian Macdonald at the St. Regis Hotel were met by police barricades outside, swat teams in the lobby and an imposing character in the elevator. But nowadays such heightened security seems to be the status
quo.
Or, word that someone major is in town. "It's Dick Cheney," divulged one wide-eyed fashion editor as she entered the party. "The whole street was sectioned off and I told an officer that I must get to a Givenchy event and what in god's name is going on? And he told me it was
Cheney."
"Is that right?" marveled a heavy Welsh-accented Macdonald, who's in town until Saturday before heading back to Paris to put finishing touches on the Givenchy couture collection. "Isn't that
exciting.
"What really excited Macdonald, though, was to learn that the Midas-like Ms. J. Lo had scooped up some Givenchy Spring 2002 looks for upcoming performances. "That is fantastic. I hadn't heard about that yet," he said, adding with a childlike curiosity, "Oooh, d'ya know which
ones?"
"Beautiful ones," a very politic head of in-house PR, Elizabeth Loomis, chimed
in.
No stranger to celebrity clientele (his own eponymous knitwear line has attracted fans like Gwen Stefani and Liz Hurley), Macdonald's excitement seemed to stem from the fact that despite his first ready-to-wear collection for the LVMH-owned French luxury house having been met with lukewarm reviews, it will market quite well. A reassuring fact for Macdonald, who follows in a line of illustrious men like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen to head up Givenchy design.
"I was definitely anxious - like anyone with a new job. But I've relaxed a bit since putting out the two collections, especially since the response to the last one was
positive."
As evidenced by one celebrity guest. "Well, I certainly like the tops," claimed "The Sopranos" Joey Pantoliano, gesturing to one model in a sheer dress that exposed almost all. "Yeah, I like Givenchy. Is that the party I'm at?" he questioned, claiming his pal Chazz Palmentieri had told him to
come.
But Joey Pants wasn't the only seemingly displaced celeb at the intimate soiree. Also mingling amongst fashion editors was a soft-spoken, Anna Sui-clad Lisa Marie, who as a fashion lover had come to check Givenchy and Macdonald out, not knowing what to
expect.
And speaking of what to expect -- any hint about the fall 2002 line? "Rich and textured," was all Macdonald would divulge.
